Beit Yonatan is an apartment building owned by Ateret Cohanim and located in the Silwan neighborhood just outside the Old City of Jerusalem. The building has been the subject of many issues and debates between Jews and Arabs in Israel. ==History== Beit Yonatan is a 7-story apartment building located in Silwan and named after Jonathan Pollard, a former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst convicted of spying for Israel who is currently incarcerated in the U.S.〔(Yishai moves to legalize Jewish ownership of East Jerusalem building ) – Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 According to Ateret Cohanim, when Pollard had first heard that residents of the building were possibly going to be evicted, he felt faint and was taken to hospital.〔(Chanukah at Beit Yonatan ) – Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 When asked in prison what could be done for him, his only request was for the Jewish residents to remain in Beit Yonatan.〔 The building stands out due to its greater height relative to surrounding structures and the 6 story Israeli flag draped down the side.〔(Israel Police likely to evacuate contentious East Jerusalem home this week ) – Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 The Silwan neighborhood prior to the 1938 Arab riots was primarily Jewish and was known as Harat al-Yaman. Once the riots forced the Jewish population to leave, no Jews lived in this once thriving community for many years. Ateret Cohanim, the building’s owner, has taken on the mission of returning Jewish population and life to areas around East Jerusalem, especially those previous included in the City of David, including Silwan.〔(11 Jewish families move into J'lem neighborhood of Silwan ) – Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 The building was built without permits in 2002,〔(Deputy Jerusalem Mayor Pollack Seeking to Save Beit Yonatan ) – Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 for Ateret Cohanim, and opened in 2004.〔(State prosecutor to Barkat: Seal off Beit Yonatan ) – Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 Ateret Cohanim, through an intermediary had both Beit Yonatan built and another building purchased, under the auspices of being used as Muslim apartment buildings, however just before opening revealed they were for Jewish residence.〔(How Israeli settlements popped up in Baten el-Hawa ) – Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 In the early morning of 1 April 2004, 11 families moved into Beit Yonatan, with the help of Israeli security.〔 The Israeli government provides security for the structure despite the residents defying the eviction notice.〔(Beit Yonatan on CBS-60 Minutes ) – Retrieved 28 August 2013〕 Due to security concerns the first floor of the building is set up as a security office, and the playground for the kids is located on the roof.〔 抄文引用元・出典: フリー百科事典『 ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)』 ■ウィキペディアで「Beit Yonatan」の詳細全文を読む スポンサード リンク
